About Us

 hospitalization, IV fluids

We have been in this area since 1993 and changed our name to SunShine Animal Hospital in 2002 when we moved to our new, state-of-the-art hospital. Owned and operated by Dr. Kevin J. Fontenot, DVM, the hospital has over 5,100 square feet of treatment and boarding space. Dr. Fontenot graduated in 1991 from Louisiana State University, where he focused on small animal medicine and surgery. After graduation, Dr. Fontenot practiced medicine in Florida until settling down in Melbourne.

When we planned and built SunShine Animal Hospital, our goal was to continue the level of care our clients had become accustomed to and to further offer a higher level of service to our patients. To that end, we expanded to include indoor, air conditioned boarding, a fenced exercise yard, a state-of-the-art computer networked medical records system, an expanded pharmacy, an in-office laboratory, hospitalization, IV fluids, an intensive care unit, pulse oximetry, EKG, respiratory monitors, fluid pumps, chemotherapy, radiographs, ultrasonic teeth cleaning, abdominal and heart ultrasound, and a fully equipped operating room.

All staff members complete professional training through Animal Care Technologies, as well as doctor-supervised individualized training. This allows us to assure that we provide a consistent level of care to all of our patients.

Our in-house laboratory allows us to diagnose a pet’s medical problems quickly and efficiently, often while the client waits with their pet. We are able to perform x-rays and sonograms in our facility without having to send the client and patient elsewhere. Once we diagnose a pet’s problem, we have a fully stocked in-house pharmacy to meet all of our patients’ needs.

Should the need arise, our surgical suite is ready at a moment’s notice. And when it comes to surgical safety, “corners” are the one thing we never cut. All anesthetic patients receive an IV catheter and IV fluids to maintain blood pressure, prevent dehydration and allow immediate administration of needed medication. All patients have their blood oxygen level, heart rate, EKG, body temperature and respiration continuously monitored electronically during surgery. fluid pumps, chemotherapy, radiographs Patients are kept warm during surgery using warm-air-circulating blankets and/or warm-water-circulating blankets, the exact same equipment used on people during surgery. We sterilize all of our surgical equipment and supplies between every patient to prevent the spread of infectious disease. Our surgeons and staff follow safety precautions that are the highest in the nation to assure your pet’s safety.
